I learned to make these bagels last year and man they make me so happy! Something I've always luckily had access too was a fresh made bagel and they are so good when you live in New York. So here is how you get that homemade New York Bagel in your own home no matter where you are!
Ingredients to make 6-8 Bagels:
- 2 teaspoons of Activated Dry Yeast
- 3 1/2 cups of Bread Flour
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of Granulated Sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of Salt (I prefer Pink Himalayan Sea Salt)
- 1 1/4 cups of water (you may need more if your dough is not binding properly)
- Olive Oil
Steps to make:
- In a small mixing bowl combine 1/ 2 cup of warm water, 1 1/2 tablespoons of sugar and the 2 teaspoons of Activated Dry Yeast together DO NOT STIR, let sit for 5 minutes and then you may stir until it all dissolves
- Mix Flour and salt in large bowl, if you have a stand mixer you can use that bowl if you'd like!
- Create a well in the middle of the flour and salt mixture, then pour in the yeast and sugar mixture you made in step one.
- Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic, this can be done by hand or in your hand mixer with the kneading attachment. If the dough gets too sticky add some more flour and if your dough is not combining properly (too floury) add more water, do this in small increments until you feel the dough is just right!
- Lightly Brush a large bowl (I use a glass one) with olive oil and turn and coat the outside of the dough with a small/light coat of olive oil as well in the bowl.
- Take a damp paper towel or clean damp dishtowel and cover the bowl so the dough can rise it should rise in a warm place for at least 1 hour in which the dough will double in size
- Punch the dough down and let it rest for 10 minutes
- Divide the dough into 6-8 pieces, )the amount will depend on what size you would like your bagels) Make them into round balls then coat your finger in flour and punch a whole through the middle to create a bagel shape place on cookie sheet when shaped and cover with damp towel
- Pre-heat oven to 425*f and Start a big pot of water to boil on the stove
- Use a slotted spoon to drop the bagels into the boiling water let them sit for 1 1/2 minutes then flip and let them sit for an additional 1 1/2 minutes do this with each bagel, you can add multiple to the pot as long as the fit nicely and do not sink each other
- Place back on cookie sheet and if you would like you can top with your favorite toppings! We've used cinnamon sugar, everything bagel seasoning from Trader Joes, and Flavor God seasonings too!
- Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown
- either let them cool down or enjoy warm! place the remaining bagels into a Ziploc or airtight container to enjoy through out the week!
